L-KOPIA in WV Tunnels and LKO busy with Swedish Rail (Trafikverket)
The L-KOPIA Excursion laser truck in front of tunnel grinding equipment in Kimball, West Virginia on August 7th. L-KOPIA measured seven double track tunnels and the customer sent in grinding equipment directly if needed.

L-KOPIA has been involved in tunnel surveys for the Heartland Corridor since March 2005. The extensive project involves modifications of several railroad tunnels in West Virginia and surrounding states. L-KOPIA, acting as a subcontractor, performed the initial survey on all these tunnels. The original data from 2005 was converted to other formats and used by the main contractor as the base for all modifications in the tunnels, to allow a larger envelope (Plate H and larger).

The Heartland project is now near the finish line and L-KOPIA helped one of the contractors with a “final survey” to verify the modifications. We measured seven (7) double track tunnels in one long shift (12 hours) and all data was e-mailed to the customer within two (2) days after the fieldwork (504 cross sections with 720 points in each). L-KOPIA delivered our user-friendly PDF plots with given distances from templates to tunnel walls.

Please contact L-KOPIA regarding this application, before you start a more expensive and time consuming 3D survey. Our ON-LINE system gives our customers direct results, meaning that we have a customer representative in our laser truck and he/she can make immediate decision if more work is needed, for example sending in a “grinder” to extend notches.

In Sweden, the very large clearance project with Trafikverket (Swedish Rail) that LKO started in April of 2010, is about to be finished. Among many Swedish Rail Main-Lines, LKO also surveyed the important freight line from Ludvika to Norrköping. The line from Ludvika to Norrköping handles all major ABB transformers for the world. This line also handles repairs and revisions (being two trips, one to and one from ABB, Ludvika). The Ludvika plant is the main facility for new transformers to be loaded onto special freight cars for transportation to Norrköping harbor. LKO surveyed approximately 500 km of main tracks and we measured over 51,000 structures (many caternary poles, support and wires). We also measured track center distances for the whole line.

Furthermore, LKO also tested the last of three legs of a new Main-Line in the northern part of Sweden, from Härnösand to Umeå. This new line is approximate 180 km long and LKO measured over 1,700 structures. Data processing is ongoing.
